Kick off your Independence Day celebrations early at Temple Baptist Church's annual Community Picnic on June 28 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. With food trucks, a kids' fun zone, family-friendly activities, and a spectacular fireworks show, this community favorite offers an evening of fun for all ages.
On July 2, the Star-Spangled Celebration will kick off the weekend’s patriotic festivities in both Hattiesburg and Petal! Both cities will host music and activities, the family-friendly – and FREE! – event will offer kid zones, event t-shirts, and specialty souvenirs.
At 9 p.m., the two cities will join forces in a spectacular fireworks show over the Leaf River that you don’t want to miss. Bring your lawn chair or a blanket and sit back to enjoy the show. This celebration of the country’s 250th birthday will take place at The Commons at Gordon's Creek in Hattiesburg and Petal River Park in Petal. Join us at this grand event from 6 p.m. - 10 p.m.
Paul B. Johnson State Park is hosting two events to celebrate the season. Day one will be on July 3, a showcase water activities & evening entertainment Event. On July 4, a full-day celebration event will celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary, complete with a fireworks display. The event costs $5 a person a day, with children ages 5 and under free.
Want to spend some time out on the water? Right outside of town, we have two great rivers to explore. Whether you like to ride the lazy river or paddle downstream, Black Creek Canoe Rentals and Okatoma Outdoor Posts are a great way to get outside and get going! Both have kayaks and canoes available to rent, but call ahead to reserve yours!
Open from dawn until dusk, the Longleaf Trace starts in Hattiesburg and runs all the way to Prentiss; run, walk, or cycle your way through a peaceful and shady trail. Don’t forget to pack a picnic for a shaded stop along the way. The gateway at USM offers a variety of bikes for rent from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday.
The Hattiesburg Zoo is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Zoo has nearly 100 species of animals, a train, a splash pad, and a ropes course for every kind of adventurer! Splash into Serengeti Springs, Hattiesburg's premier water park, open daily this summer and on July 4.
Looking to grab a bite to eat? Hattiesburg is home to plenty of family-friendly restaurants. Treat yourself with a gourmet shake at Ed’s Burger Joint before battling your kids in giant yard games. Others take a stop on the Hattiesburger Trail at some of our favorite spots like Topher’s Rock ‘N Roll Grill, Glory Bound, and Mugshots.
