Family-Friendly Fourth

Plan your 4th of July celebrations in Hattiesburg with this guide to all things family-friendly!

On July 3, a Star-Spangled Celebration on the River will kick off the week’s festivities in both Hattiesburg and Petal! The two cities will host music, activities, and, of course, food on their respective sides of the Leaf River! The family-friendly event will offer kid zones, event t-shirts, and specialty souvenirs.  At 9 PM, the two cities join forces in a spectacular fireworks show over the Leaf River that you don’t want to miss. Bring your lawn chair or a blanket and sit back to enjoy the show. This new celebration of the country's birthday will take place in Chain Park in Hattiesburg and Petal River Park in Petal.

For a fireworks show on the 4th, check out Paul B. Johnson State Park. The entry fee is $6 a car for up to six people. The fireworks display will start at 9 PM!

Want to spend some time out on the water? Right outside of town we have two great creeks to explore. Whether you like to ride the lazy river or paddle downstream, Black Creek Canoe Rentals and Okatoma Outdoor Post are a great way to get outside and get going! Both have kayaks and canoes available to rent, but call ahead to reserve yours!

Open from dawn until dusk, the Longleaf Trace starts in Hattiesburg and runs all the way to Prentiss; run, walk or cycle your way through a peaceful and shady trail. Don’t forget to pack a picnic for a shaded-stop along the way. The gateway at USM offers a variety of bikes for rent from 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Thursday, and 8 AM to 6 PM Friday and Saturday.

The Hattiesburg Zoo is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM! The Zoo has nearly 100 species of animals, a train, a splash pad and a ropes course for every kind of adventurer! Admission is $5 for everyone 2 and up.
