3 Hattiesburg Restaurants for BBQ Lovers

Hi there! I’m Darren Wayland, and barbecue is my dream date. Even better than the classic taste of great barbecue, though, is the camaraderie it brings. I love sharing my delicious creations with my friends and family, especially when they’re enjoying the flavors and festivities as much as I am.

Are you a sucker for good barbecue? Are you planning a visit to hip, happening Hattiesburg? If the answer to both questions is yes, you've come to the right place.

As grilling aficionados, we're always on the lookout for places that know their way around authentic barbecue. We especially enjoy exploring the various regional interpretations of the technique. Here are five area restaurants that are guaranteed to stoke the taste buds of all BBQ enthusiasts.

Murky Waters BBQ

This late-night favorite is popular enough to have made a mark in three different locations. Fortunately, Hattiesburg is on the list. While the list of smoked options is extensive, the menu caters to other tastes as well, so you can take along any members of your group that might not be as enamored of the BBQ scene (gasp!) Even die-hards might be swayed by the sandwich selection, including the fully dressed Beale Street burger (topped with steak, grilled onions, bacon, and cheese). Don't miss out on the smoked wings, with their array of sauce options. We're partial to the honey spicy BBQ, but would recommend placing a few orders of six so you can sample a variety of flavors.

Since grilled and smoked foods always make us thirsty, we especially appreciate the thoughtful draft beer list at Murky Waters. If you'd like to make a night of it, live blues music is performed on Wing Night Wednesday at the Hattiesburg location.

Texas PitMaster BBQ

Texas Pitmaster is more than just an eatery—it's a full-on experience. For the proprietors of this unpretentious establishment, BBQ isn't a meal opportunity so much as a dedicated lifestyle choice. The carefully honed menu includes brisket, pulled pork, ribs, chicken, and sausages—all made from the finest all-natural ingredients. All meals include a dinner roll and your choice of smoked corn, baked beans, or loaded potato salad.

Texas Pitmaster BBQ offers catering for those of you who are planning a special event in the Hattiesburg region. If you enjoy your meal, their house-made sauces and rubs are available for purchase in the retail store. You can even purchase real cowboy jerky, smoked and dehydrated right on the premises.

Strick's Bar-B-Q and Catering

If you're looking for authentic barbecue that's sold by the pound, Strick's is a solid option. Pork ribs, beef brisket, smoked sausages, and half-chickens are just a few of the options available. For dessert, the banana pudding is a local favorite, offered in several different sizes to accommodate the size of your group.

Like Texas Pitmaster, the business also offers catering for off-premise events. If you go this route, be sure to check out their separate catering menu, which is more extensive than their regular list. To give you some idea of the brand's attention to detail, it's worth noting that Strick's also operates a deer processing facility.

Bon appetit!
