Victoria Jackson Gray Adams was a civil rights activist and one of the founding members of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and the Council of Federated Organization (COFO). In the 1960 elections, she trained people in voter registration and taught literacy classes so that many African Americans could read, write, and understand the Constitution. In 1964, as a member of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, she decided to run against Senator John Stennis, a white segregationist. During Freedom Summer, she helped open the Freedom Schools to push for civil rights in Mississippi.
